Increasing Resilience in the Twente Inland Shipping Corridor

How do low and high water levels affect inland shipping in the Twente corridor, and what makes it more resilient?

Overview

This thesis examined how climate-driven water-level extremes affect inland shipping in the Rotterdam–Twente corridor.

It used a UML conceptual model to map the system, then ran scenarios on Deltares’ digital twin of the Dutch waterways under normal, low and high water conditions.

It measured transit time, loading time, vessel utilisation and energy use, and proposed resilience strategies such as matching vessel class to water level.

Highlights

  • Built a UML conceptual model of the corridor’s fleet, cargo, waterways and infrastructure
  • Simulated container and dry-bulk flows at normal, low and high water levels
  • Proposed vessel-dispatch strategies to reduce delays
